De Groene Hart Biënnale is een nieuw internationaal, regionaal en lokaal festival van kunst en design voor ecologische regeneratie, gericht op het Groene Hart. Het onderzoekt hoe kunst, ontwerp en burgerinitiatieven kunnen bijdragen aan herstel en verbetering van de lokale leefomgeving voor alle levensvormen.
Op zaterdag 30 mei, om 15.00 uur opent de hoofdtentoonstelling van het festival bij GOUDasfalt, het omvangrijke bottom-up creatieve broedterrein aan de Hollandse IJssel, pal tegenover het historische centrum van de stad Gouda.
De officiële opening van de eerste editie van het festival wordt verricht door Thierry van Vugt, wethouder van Cultuur, erfgoed en monumenten bij de gemeente Gouda.
De tentoonstelling brengt lokale en internationale eco-regeneratieve kunst- en designprojecten samen, die aansluiten bij de vier hoofdthema’s van het festival: Swamp Imaginaries, The Underground, Arboreal en Under Water.
Tijdens rondleidingen voor het publiek vertellen aanwezige kunstenaars en ontwerpers over hun werk en de achterliggende ideeën. Met ondermeer: Eva-Maria Lopez, Christine Hvidt, Nicole Spit, Lilet Breddels, Max Latour, Letizia Artioli, Pawel Pokutycki, Green Office en de curatoren Eric Kluitenberg en Tania Goryucheva.
Op de zondagmiddag, 31 mei, vanaf 13 uur leidt Christine Hvidt luistersessies met het publiek bij haar sculptuur Subterranean, een luistersculptuur gemaakt van afgedankte boomstronken die het leven in de bodem hoorbaar maakt.
Die middag gaan we in gesprek met de aanwezige kunstenaars, ontwerpers en speciale gasten en het publiek.
De tentoonstelling is daarna vrij toegankelijk op woensdag tot en met zondag van 11 tot 19 uur en loopt door tot en met zondag 21 juni.
Thema’s en kunstenaars
Rond het thema Swamp Imaginaries deed Anne Zarske artistiek onderzoek in en naar de Nieuwkoopse Plassen. Dit leidde tot een nieuwe film en een locatie-specifieke performance die op 6 juni in het gebied plaats vindt. Het internationale kunst- en onderzoeksproject Sensing Peat plaatst hier haar verkenningen van moerasgebieden in verschillende werelddelen tegenover.
Christine Hvidt installeert luistersculpturen gebouwd met afgedankte boomstronken bij GOUDasfalt en tegelijk bij Tuinen van Boskoop en Het Groene Huis in Boskoop. Haar project Subterranean maakt de geluiden van de levende bodem hoorbaar. In luistersessies gidst de kunstenaar het publiek door sonische verkenningstochten van het leven onder onze voeten, onderdeel van het thema The Underground.
Voor het thema Arboreal presenteert Nicole Spit 3D-scans van monumentale bomen en verhalen van bewoners uit Gouda over wat zij voor hen betekenen, in het Digitaal Bomen Monument – een model om deze bijzondere bomen te behouden in een virtuele omgeving.
Voor Under Water verricht Minji Kim onderzoek naar het akoestische landschap van de grote rivieren bij Gorinchem. Met zelfgebouwde EMV-microfoons maakt zij de geluidsgolven onder de menselijke hoorgrens hoorbaar – deze trillingen, veelal veroorzaakt door grote schepen en machines, hebben een groter invloed op het leven in en langs de rivieren. In haar workshop op 18 juni in Gorinchem leert ze deelnemers deze zelf te bouwen en eigen geluidsonderzoek te doen.
Het Dnipro Integrated Vision project ontwikkelde uitvoerige scenario’s voor het stroomgebied van de Dnipro rivier in Oekraïne, dat na het opblazen van de Kakhovska dam een bevroren front in de oorlog werd. Hoe kan regeneratie van een hele regio worden geconcipieerd, reikhalzend vooruit ziend naar het einde van dat vreselijke conflict?
Met het eco-activistische land art project en siertuin we.resist / I never promised you a green garden vestigt Eva Maria Lopez de aandacht op de problemen die samenhangen met het gebruik van herbiciden tegen planten die in de landbouw en tuinbouw als onkruid worden beschouwd.
Urban Reef toont het resultaat van een nieuwe methode om sculpturale elementen 3D te printen met klei, die een gunstig habitat bieden voor diverse levensvormen, planten, insecten en andere wezens.
Het Green Office van de KABK in Den Haag en EcoSenda, een Europees onderwijsproject, laten zien hoe ecologische en regeneratieve principes in het kunstonderwijs kunnen worden geïntegreerd.
Letizia Artioli ontwikkelde het ruimtelijke ontwerp van de tentoonstelling, een materialisatie van onzichtbare ecologische netwerken.

Vier weekenden met speciale publieksprogramma’s
Na het openingsweekend in Gouda vinden lokale publieksprogramma’s plaats in opeenvolgende weekeinden op verschillende locaties in het Groene Hart: 6 en 7 juni in Nieuwkoop en de Nieuwkoopse Plassen, 13 en 14 juni in Boskoop, 18 juni in Gorinchem en op 20 en 21 juni tenslotte in Gouda.
Organisatie
De Groene Hart Biënnale wordt georganiseerd door Terrestris, het nieuwe platform voor eco-regeneratieve cultuur, geïnitieerd en geleid door Eric Kluitenberg en Tania Goryucheva, in samenwerking met een uitgebreid netwerk van regionale en (inter)nationale partners. De inzet is om het festival tweejaarlijks in het Groene Hart te organiseren.

The Green Heart Biennale is a new international, regional, and local festival of art and design for ecological regeneration, focused on the Green Heart region. It explores how art, design, and citizen initiatives can contribute to the restoration and improvement of the local living environment for all forms of life.
On Saturday, May 30, at 15.00, the festival's main exhibition opens at GOUDasfalt, the extensive bottom-up creative hub on the Hollandse IJssel, directly opposite the historic city center of Gouda.
The official opening of the first edition of the festival will be performed by Thierry van Vugt, Alderman for Culture, Heritage, and Monuments at the Municipality of Gouda. The exhibition brings together local and international eco-regenerative art and design projects that align with the festival's four main themes: Swamp Imaginaries, The Underground, Arboreal, and Under Water.
During guided tours for the public, attending artists and designers will discuss their work and the underlying ideas. Featuring, among others: Eva-Maria Lopez, Christine Hvidt, Nicole Spit, Lilet Breddels, Max Latour, Letizia Artioli, Pawel Pokutycki, Green Office, and curators Eric Kluitenberg and Tania Goryucheva.
On Sunday afternoon, May 31, starting at 13.00, Christine Hvidt will lead listening sessions with the public at her sculpture *Subterranean*, a listening sculpture made from discarded tree stumps that makes life in the soil audible.
That afternoon, we will engage in conversation with the attending artists, designers, special guests, and the public.
The exhibition is then freely accessible from Wednesday to Sunday from 11.00 to 19.00, and runs through Sunday, June 21.
Themes and Artists
Around the theme Swamp Imaginaries, Anne Zarske conducted artistic research in and into the Nieuwkoopse Plassen. This resulted in a new film, and a site-specific performance taking place in the area on June 6. The international art and research project Sensing Peat juxtaposes this with its explorations of wetlands in various parts of the world.
Christine Hvidt is installing listening sculptures built with discarded tree stumps at GOUDasfalt and simultaneously at Tuinen van Boskoop and Het Groene Huis in Boskoop. Her project Subterranean makes the sounds of the living soil audible. In listening sessions, the artist guides the public through sonic explorations of the life beneath our feet, part of the theme The Underground.
For the theme Arboreal, Nicole Spit presents 3D scans of monumental trees and stories from residents of Gouda about what they mean to them in the Digital Tree Monument – a model to preserve these special trees in a virtual environment.
For Under Water, Minji Kim is conducting research into the acoustic landscape of the major rivers near Gorinchem. Using self-built EMF microphones, she makes sound waves audible that lie below the human hearing limit. These vibrations, often caused by large ships and machinery, have a strong impact on life in and along the rivers. In her workshop on June 18 in Gorinchem, she teaches participants how to build these microphones themselves and conduct their own sound research.
The Dnipro Integrated Vision project developed extensive scenarios for the Dnipro River basin in Ukraine, which became a frozen front in the war following the destruction of the Kakhovska Dam. How can the regeneration of an entire region be conceived, eagerly looking forward to the end of this terrible conflict?
With the eco-activist land art project and ornamental garden we.resist / I never promised you a green garden, Eva Maria Lopez draws attention to the problems associated with the use of herbicides against plants considered weeds in agriculture and horticulture.
Urban Reef presents the result of a new method for 3D printing sculptural elements using clay, which provide a favourable habitat for diverse life forms, plants, insects, and other creatures.
The Green Office of the KABK in The Hague and EcoSenda, a European educational project, demonstrate how ecological and regenerative principles can be integrated into art education.
Letizia Artioli developed the spatial design of the exhibition, a materialisation of invisible ecological networks.

Four weekends with special public programs
Following the opening weekend in Gouda, local public programs will take place over consecutive weekends at various locations in the Groene Hart: June 6 and 7 in Nieuwkoop and the Nieuwkoopse Plassen, June 13 and 14 in Boskoop, June 18 in Gorinchem, and finally on June 20 and 21 in Gouda.

The Green Heart Biennale is organised by Terrestris, the new platform for eco-regenerative culture, initiated and lead by Eric Kluitenberg en Tania Goryucheva, in collaboration with an extensive network of regional and (inter)national partners. The aim is to organise the festival every two years in the Green Heart region.
