10.00    Opening / introductions - Eric Kluitenberg (moderator)

Deel I     Reviving River Ecologies

In het ochtendprogramma tot de lunch onderzoeken we hoe ecologische regeneratie in uiterst verschillende contexten (geografisch, politiek, cultureel) kan worden vormgegeven? Welke nieuwe perspectieven kunnen hier worden geschetst? Hoe om te gaan met de complexiteit van verstrengelde ecologische, economische, technologische en politieke systemen?

De presentaties richten zich op deze vragen in relatie tot drie zeer onderscheidende rivieromgevingen en hun specifieke ecologieën: de rivierbedding van de Dnjepr in Oekraïne, de kades van de Maas in het centrum van Rotterdam en de akoestische omgeving van de grote rivieren bij Gorinchem, waar Maas en Waal samenvloeien.

10.30     Svitlana Usychenko & Fulco Treffers - Dnipro Integrated  Vision

Het Dnipro Integrated Vision-project is een gezamenlijk werk van Ro3kvit, Urban Coalition for Ukraine, en Greenpeace, waarbij de Dnipro-rivier wordt onderzocht als een levend systeem in tijden van kwetsbaarheid en transformatie. Hoe kan regeneratie worden bedacht op de schaal van een hele rivierbedding? – in de donkerste omstandigheden na vier jaar oorlog. Het project heeft tot doel een visie te ontwikkelen voor de rivier de Dnipro. Om het ongebruikte potentieel te laten zien. Dialoog creëren en kennis delen. Om alternatieven te geven. Om te inspireren.

11.15     Pierre Oskam - TIJMAKERS: Getijdepoelen & regeneratief design

TIJMAKERS is een pilot waarin wordt onderzocht hoe bestaande, verharde kademuren langs de Nieuwe Maas ecologisch kunnen worden verrijkt door middel van modulaire getijdenpoelen, volledig gemaakt van lokale en hergebruikte materialen. Aan de hand van dit project als voorbeeld van een regeneratieve design-interventie zal Oskam deze analyse uitbreiden tot een meer algemene discussie over regeneratief ontwerp en de kwestie van schaal bij het realiseren van daadwerkelijk substantiële ecologische voordelen.

11.45     Minji Kim - Acoustic River Ecologies - EMF listening in Gorinchem 

Geluidskunstenaar en onderzoeker Minji Kim bestudeert grootschalige waterinfrastructuren en hun akoestische ecologieën. Voor ons festival heeft ze veldopnames gemaakt in en rond de grote rivieren bij Gorinchem, het symbolische punt waar Maas en Waal samenvloeien. Kim heeft subsonische verschijnselen opgenomen met behulp van EMF-microfoons. Deze geluidsgolven, die grotendeels door menselijke activiteit worden geproduceerd, zijn weliswaar onhoorbaar voor het menselijk oor, maar hebben een enorme invloed op de leefomgeving in en rond de rivieren.

Deel II     Bioregional Finance and Alternatives

Het middagprogramma stelt de vraag hoe bruikbare en effectieve financiële capaciteiten kunnen worden ontwikkeld om ecologische regeneratieve methodes en principes in de praktijk te kunnen brengen?

Hierbij spelen ondermeer vraagstukken van ‘schaal’ een grote rol: Moeten de bestaande financiële structuren worden ‘bijgebogen’ naar bioregionaal specifieke (agro-ecologische) manieren van werken – zoals de voorstanders van Bioregionale Financiering’ voorstaan? Of moeten juist alternatieve modellen worden ontwikkeld, kleinschaliger, in de lokale context en gemeenschappen gegrondvest? Meer in het algemeen willen we onderzoeken hoe ‘ecologische waarde’ kan worden uitgedrukt in termen van een gedeelde economie voor alle vormen van leven? 

14.00     David Bollier & Natasha Hulst - Relationalised finance

Gerenommeerde Commons-theoreticus en activist David Bollier schreef onlangs samen met Natasha Hulst, mede-oprichter van Voedselpark Amsterdam en verbonden aan Schumacher Action Labs en de Bioregional Weaving Labs, een paper over alternatieve financieringsmodellen, geworteld in lokale gemeenschappen en economieën die zij ‘Relationalised Finance’ noemen.

Hoe kunnen dergelijke benaderingen modellen bieden voor veerkrachtiger lokale economieën die ook cruciale ecologische problemen aanpakken?

14.45     Klaas Kuitenbrouwer - Waarde in een gedeelde economie voor alle vormen van leven

Klaas Kuitenbrouwer is onderzoeker en curator bij het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam en directeur van het Zoönomic Institute. Hij zal de ideeën bespreken achter een nieuw project dat tot doel heeft bij te dragen aan een nieuwe manier om ecologische en economische waarde te bepalen in een gedeelde economie voor alle vormen van leven. Hoe kunnen we zowel de economische als de ecologische waarde op een andere manier begrijpen en tot uitdrukking brengen in een context van uitwisseling tussen meersoortige gemeenschappen?

15.15     Respondent: Rob Lubberink

Rob Lubberink, onderzoeker bij het Centre for Economic Transformation van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam zal in deze sessie op alle drie de sprekers reageren en enkele kwesties naar voren brengen voor verdere discussie. Dit opent de vloer voor een bredere discussie met het publiek en de presentatoren

Part I     Reviving River Ecologies

In the morning program until lunch, we explore how ecological regeneration can be designed within sharply different contexts (geographical, political, cultural). What new perspectives can be outlined here? How to deal with the complexity of entangled ecological, economic, technological, and political systems?

The presentations focus these questions on markedly different river environments and their specific ecologies: the Dnipro riverbed in Ukraine, the quay walls of the Maas rivers in central Rotterdam, and the acoustic environment of the big rivers at Gorinchem, where Maas and Waal flow together. 

10.30     Svitlana Usychenko & Fulco Treffers - Dnipro Integrated  Vision

The Dnipro Integrated Vision project is a joint work of Ro3kvit, Urban Coalition for Ukraine, and Greenpeace, exploring the Dnipro River as a living system in times of fragility and transformation. How can regeneration be conceived at the scale of an entire riverbed? – in the darkest of circumstances after four years of war. The project aims to develop a vision for the Dnipro River. To show the unused potential. To create dialogue and share knowledge. To give alternatives. To inspire.

11.15     Pierre Oskam - Tidal Pools & Regenerative Design

TIJMAKERS is a pilot that investigates how existing, paved quay walls along the Nieuwe Maas can be ecologically enriched by means of modular tidal pools, made entirely of local and recycled materials. Taking this project as an example of a regenerative design intervention Oskam will expand this analysis into a more general discussion of regenerative design and issues of scale in actually delivering substantial ecological benefits.

11.45     Minji Kim - Acoustic River Ecologies - EMF listening in Gorinchem 

Sound artist and researcher Minji Kim is studying massive water infrastructures and their acoustic ecologies. For our festival she has been doing field-recordings in and around the big rivers at Gorinchem, the symbolic point where Maas and Waal flow together. Kim has been recording sub-sonic phenomena using EMF microphones. These sound waves, mostly produced by human activity, though inaudible to the human ear, have a tremendous influence on the living environment in and around the rivers.

Part II     Bioregional Finance and Alternatives

The afternoon program poses the question how usable and effective financial capacities can be developed to put ecological regenerative methods and principles into practice?

Issues of ‘scale’ play a major role in this: Should existing financial structures be ‘bent’ to bioregionally specific (agro-ecological) ways of working – as advocated by proponents of ‘Bioregional Finance’? Or should alternative models be developed instead, on a smaller scale, rooted in the local context and communities? More generally we want to explore how ‘ecological value’ can be expressed in terms of  a shared economy for all forms of life?

14.00     David Bollier & Natasha Hulst - Relationalised Finance

Renown Commons theorist and activist David Bollier recently co-authored a paper with Natasha Hulst co-founder of Voedselpark Amsterdam and connected to Schumacher Action Labs and the Bioregional Weaving Labs, about alternative models of financing, rooted in local communities and economies that they refer to as ‘Relationalised Finance’.

How can such approaches provide  models for more resilient local economies that also address vital ecological concerns? 

14.45     Klaas Kuitenbrouwer – Value in a shared economy for all forms of life

Klaas Kuitenbrouwer is a researcher and curator at Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam and director of the Zoönomic Institute. He will discuss the ideas behind a new project that aims to contribute to a new way of determining ecological and economic value in a shared economy for all forms of life. How can we understand and express both economic and ecological value differently in a context of multispecies exchanges?

Rob Lubberink, researcher at the Centre for Economic Transformation at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences will respond to all three presenters in this session and draw out some issues for further discussion. This will open the floor for a broader discussion with the audience and the presenters

Komend weekend bij de Groene Hart Biënnale

Rond het komende weekend, van 13 tot en met 15 juni, staat Boskoop centraal in de Groene Hart Biënnale, een alom bekend centrum voor horticultuur met een lange traditie in het kweken van planten, struiken en bomen. Hoe kunnen we ons verhouden tot de bodem in deze omgeving? Waar liggen hier de mogelijkheden voor regeneratieve methoden en benaderingen?

We bespreken deze vragen met uitgenodigde gasten, wetenschappers, kunstenaars en anderen, in het kader van Christine Hvidt’s kunst- en onderzoeksproject Subterranean.

Doe mee met een dag vol verbondenheid met de bodem tijdens deze openbare artscience bijeenkomst!

Hoe kennen we de bodem? Wat is bodem en wat leeft erin? Op welke verschillende manieren kunnen we de bodem leren kennen en hoe willen we ons ertoe verhouden?

De Subterranean Dialogues zijn sessies die deze vragen verkennen door middel van artistieke ‘attunement’ (afstemming) en wetenschappelijke benaderingen in poëtische en somatische (belichaamde) contexten.

Neem deel aan een luister- en bodemsessie onder leiding van kunstenaar Christine Hvidt, een bodemkennis onder leiding van bodembioloog Giulia Borngiorno (Wageningen University & Research), en een gezamenlijke dialoog over het kennen van de bodem en hoe we ons met en tot de bodem verhouden.

Deze eerste sessie vindt buiten plaats op het terrein van Kwekerij Het Groene Huis en is vrij toegankelijk.

Deze bijeenkomst maakt deel uit van het Subterranean-project, dat te zien is op de Groene Hart Biënnale in Gouda bij GOUDasfalt en in Boskoop bij Tuinen van Boskoop en Kwekerij het Groene Huis van 30 mei tot en met 21 juni 2026.

Over Subterranean

Subterranean is een interdisciplinair kunst- en wetenschapsproject dat geluidskunst, machine learning en ecologisch onderzoek combineert om het leven onder de grond te verkennen. Door bodemgeluiden van voormalige boomplantages in de omgeving van Boskoop (NL) te analyseren, versterkt het project niet-menselijke stemmen en experimenteert het met nieuwe manieren om de levendige bodemomgevingen te benaderen.

De geluidssculpturen luisteren live naar de bodem en analyseren het geluid, waardoor een dynamische compositie ontstaat gebaseerd op het sonische karakter van elke specifieke bodemecologie op de drie locaties. Een online digitale audiovisuele compositie maakt een directe vergelijking van de verschillende bodemecologieën mogelijk.

Het project nodigt uit om te luisteren naar en verbinding te maken met minder toegankelijke ecosystemen in de grond door middel van bioakoestische monitoring, live responsieve audiovisuele werken en begeleide ecocentrische attunement-sessies in dialoog met wetenschappers en het publiek.

Subterranean stelt de vraag: hoe klinkt gezonde grond? Wat kunnen we door te luisteren leren over soorten, biodiversiteit en bodemgezondheid? Hoe kan ecoakoestiek in combinatie met machine learning-gebaseerde audioanalyse onze kennis van en relatie met de bodem verdiepen? Hoe kan machine learning ons andere inzichten bieden in bodemecologieën?

Subterranean wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door het Stimuleringsfonds voor Creatieve Industrieën NL en de Groene Hart Biënnale.

Op zondag 14 juni sluiten wij aan bij de jaarlijkse kunstmarkt van Boskoop.

Tijdens dit evenement begeleidt Christine Hvidt luistersessies bij de luistersculptuur die in het park tuinen van Boskoop is geïnstalleerd. De sculptuur is onderdeel van haar kunst en onderzoeksproject Subterranean.

De levende bodem verkennen en beschermen door middel van wetenschap en kunst

In deze middagsessie (13.00 – 16.00 uur) op maandag 15 juni vergelijken we artistieke en wetenschappelijke verkenningen van de levende bodem en hoe deze kunnen bijdragen aan de bescherming van het ondergrondse leven, dat cruciaal is voor het voortbestaan van het bovengrondse leven. Wat kunnen de complementaire perspectieven vanuit de kunsten en de wetenschappen bijdragen in hun interactie aan de bescherming en het herstel van het leven in de bodem?

Deze dialoog wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met het onlangs gelanceerde onderzoeksconsortium JUST ART, waarvan de Groene Hart Biënnale maatschappelijke partner is. JUST ART is een zesjarig onderzoeksproject dat vragen over klimaatrechtvaardigheid onderzoekt door middel van artistiek onderzoek. Bodemecologieën is één van de thematische gebieden die worden onderzocht als onderdeel van dit omvangrijke onderzoeksproject.

In Boskoop koppelen we dit onderzoeksthema aan het project Subterranean van Christine Hvidt. In het aangrenzende park Tuinen van Boskoop is als onderdeel van Subterranean een luistersculptuur geplaatst. Het beeld maakt het leven in de bodem hoorbaar voor het publiek.

We gaan in dialoog met kunstenaar Christine Hvidt, onderzoekers Vasilis Kokkoris en Katja Kwastek, en nodigen je uit om actief aan dit gesprek deel te nemen.

JUST ART: Creating Common Grounds for Climate Justice Through Artistic Research is een zesjarig project gefinancierd door de Nederlandse Onderzoeksraad (NWO) en geleid door de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen.

Het project brengt kunstenaars, onderzoekers, campagnevoerders en gemeenschappen in landelijke en stedelijke regio’s in het hele Koninkrijk samen en heeft tot doel diverse strategieën van klimaatrechtvaardigheid te cultiveren door middel van artistiek onderzoek en creatieve praktijk.

Coming up next weekend at Groene Hart Biennale

Around the coming weekend, June 13 to 15 the Green Heart Biennale will focus on Boskoop, a widely recognised centre of horticulture with a long standing tradition of growing plants, bushes, and trees. How can we relate to the soil in this environment? where is the potential for regenerative methods and approaches?

We discuss these with invited guests, scientists, artists and others, in relation to Christine Hvidt’s art and research project Subterranean.

What is soil and what lives in the soil? What are the different ways of knowing soil and how would we like to relate to it?

The Subterranean Dialogues are sessions opening up these questions through artistic attunement and scientific approaches in a poetic setting. 

Join us for a listening session hosted by artist Christine Hvidt, a soil literacy experience hosted by soil biologist Giulia Borngiorno (Wageningen University & Research) followed by a shared dialogue.

For this first session we will be outdoors at the land of kwekerij Het Groene Huis.

About Subterranean

Subterranean is an interdisciplinary art–science project combining sound art, machine learning, and ecological inquiry to explore life underground. By analysing soil soundscapes from former tree plantations in the area of Boskoop (NL), it amplifies non-human voices and experiments with new ways of relating to the vibrant soil environments. 
The sound sculptures listen live to the soil and analyse the sound forming a dynamic composition based on the sonic character of each particular soil ecology at the three locations. An online digital audiovisual composition allows for direct comparison of the different soil ecologies.

The project invites for listening to and relating with less accessible ecosystems in the ground through asking what does healthy soil sound like? What can listening reveal about species, biodiversity, and soil health? How might ecoacoustics combined with machine-learning deepen our knowledge and relationship with soil and offer other narratives about soil ecologies?

During this event, Christine Hvidt will lead listening sessions at the listening sculpture installed in the Tuinen van Boskoop public park. The sculpture is part of her art and research project Subterranean.

Exploring and protecting the living soil through science and art

In this afternoon session (13.00 – 16.00) on Monday June 15 we compare artistic and scientific explorations of the living soil and how they can contribute to protecting subterranean life, which is crucial to the survival of life aboveground. What can the complementary perspectives from the arts and the sciences contribute in their interaction to protecting and the regeneration of life in the soil?

This dialogue is organised in co-operation with the recently launched JUST ART research consortium, of which the Green Heart Biennale is a societal partner. JUST ART is a six year research project that explores questions of climate justice through artistic research. Soil Ecologies is one of the thematic areas examined as part of this extensive research project.

In Boskoop we link this research topic to Christine Hvidt’s Subterranean project. A listening sculpture is installed in the adjacent tuinen van Boskoop public park as part of Subterranean. The sculpture makes the life in the soil audible for the audience.

We enter into dialogue with artist Christine Hvidt, researchers Vasilis Kokkoris and Katja Kwastek, and invite you to join the conversation.

Reminder: Inwijding luistersculptuur Subterranean van Christine Hvidt bij Tuinen van Boskoop, op Vrijdag 5 juni om 16 uur.

Iedereen is welkom op vrijdag 5 juni om 16 uur bij de feestelijke inwijding van de luistersculptuur ‘Subterranean’ van kunstenaar Christine Hvidt bij Tuinen van Boskoop. 

Christine Hvidt installeert haar luistersculpturen, gebouwd met afgedankte boomstronken, op drie locaties: bij Tuinen van Boskoop en Het Groene Huis in Boskoop en tegelijk op GOUDasfalt in Gouda. 

Haar project Subterranean (Ondergronds) maakt de geluiden van de levende bodem hoorbaar. In een luistersessie gidst de kunstenaar het publiek door een sonische verkenningstocht van het leven onder onze voeten.

De geluidssculpturen luisteren live naar de bodem en analyseren het geluid, waardoor een dynamische compositie ontstaat gebaseerd op het sonische karakter van elke specifieke bodemecologie op de drie locaties. Een online digitale audiovisuele compositie maakt een directe vergelijking van de verschillende bodemecologieën mogelijk.

Een drijvend kunstproject van Anne Zarske ism TogetherTogether.

Kunstenares Anne Zarske en kunstcollectief TogetherTogether nodigen het publiek uit om te drijven op de Nieuwkoopse Plassen, om te voelen hoe de grenzen tussen zelf, lichaam en water vervagen. Om het punt te ervaren waar verschillende ‘waterlichamen’ samenkomen..

De Nieuwkoopse Plassen is een levend archief: een landschap gevormd door veenwinning, overstromingen en menselijke handen, nog steeds in beweging met zijn eigen ritmes van riet, rivieren en luchten. Hier bewaart het water herinneringen – aan drooggelegde veengebieden, aangelegde percelen, opgeworpen dijken, doorstane ​​overstromingen. Het is zowel wond als levensader, zowel door de mens gemaakt als meer dan menselijk.

Drijven in dit water is deze geschiedenis in je lichaam voelen doordringen, onze eigen vloeiende grenzen verstrengeld te voelen met de verschuivende grond eronder. In droogte, overstromingen en vervuiling worden de watercrises niet alleen in het land, maar ook in ons geschreven. Wat hier gebeurt, gebeurt in ons: poreuze wezens gevangen in dezelfde cycli van inname, uitwisseling en transformatie.

Afstemmen op deze plek is herinneren: ook wij zijn archieven van water – fragiel, verstrengeld en onlosmakelijk verbonden met diens lot.

Sagen van het Moeras - verhalenvertellers in en rond de muziektent, Reghthuysplein, Nieuwkoop

Op zondagmiddag 7 juni, om 15.00 uur, begeven we ons naar het openluchtpodium (de Muziektent) op het historische Reghthuysplein in het hart van Nieuwkoop.

In ‘Sagen van het Moeras’ (Tales from the Swamp) ontmoeten verhalenvertellers uit verschillende moerasgebieden in Europa elkaar om mythes, folklore, symbolische voorstellingen en bovenal onze liefde voor de zachte grond van het veen met elkaar en het publiek in Nieuwkoop te delen.

Reminder: Inauguration of the listening sculpture subterranean by Christine Hvidt at Tuinen van Boskoop, Friday June 5, starting 16.00

On Friday, June 5 at 16.00, we will inaugurate the listening sculpture by artist Christine Hvidt at Tuinen van Boskoop with a festive moment.

Christine Hvidt is installing these listening sculptures, constructed from discarded tree stumps, at three locations: at Tuinen van Boskoop and Het Groene Huis in Boskoop, and simultaneously at GOUDasfalt in Gouda.

Her project is titled Subterranean and makes the sounds of the living soil audible. In a listening session, the artist guides the audience through a sonic exploration of the life beneath our feet.

The sound sculptures listen live to the soil and analyse the sound, creating a dynamic composition based on the sonic character of each specific soil ecology at the three locations. An online digital audiovisual composition enables a direct comparison of the different soil ecologies. The project invites you to listen to and connect with less accessible soil ecosystems through bioacoustic monitoring, live responsive audiovisual works, and guided ecocentric attunement sessions in dialogue with scientists and the public.

Subterranean is an interdisciplinary art–science project combining sound art, machine learning, and ecological inquiry to explore life underground. By analysing soil soundscapes from former tree plantations in the area of Boskoop (NL), it amplifies non-human voices and experiments with new ways of relating to the vibrant soil environments.

Subterranean asks, what does healthy soil sound like? What can listening reveal about species, biodiversity, and soil health? How might ecoacoustics in combination with machine-learning audio analysis deepen our knowledge and relationship with soil? How might machine learning offer other narratives about soil ecologies?

The project is part of the Groene Hart Biennial and will continue at least until June 21 (the final day of the festival).

A floating art project by Anne Zarske, with TogetherTogether

Artist Anne Zarske and art collective TogetherTogether invite audience participants to float on the Nieuwkoopse Plassen, to feel the boundaries between self, body, landscape and water dissolve. To experience the point where different ‘bodies of water’ meet..

The Nieuwkoopse Plassen is a living archive: a landscape shaped by peat extraction, flooding, and human hands, yet still moving with its own rhythms of reeds, rivers, and skies. Here, water holds memory—of bogs drained, plots carved, dikes raised, floods endured. It is both wound and lifeline, both human-made and more- than-human.

To float in these waters is to feel this history seep into the body, to sense our own fluid boundaries entangled with the shifting ground beneath. In droughts, floods, and contamination, the crises of water are written not only on the land but also within us. What happens here happens in us: porous beings caught in the same cycles of intake, exchange, and transformation.

To attune to this place is to remember: we are archives of water too—fragile, entangled, and inseparable from its fate.

Tales from the Swamp, 

On Sunday afternoon, June 7, at 15.00, we take to the open air music stage at the historical Reghthuysplein, in the heart of Nieuwkoop.

In ‘Tales from the Swamp’ tale tellers from various wetlands regions in Europe meet to share myths, folklore, symbolic imaginaries, and above all, our love for the soft soil of the peatlands with each other and with the audience in Nieuwkoop.
